15 Years ago, John Horton III died in Men’s Central Jail. Ever since his mother, Helen Jones, has been fighting for justice for her son. John and Helen have taught LA so much about how the jail system works and exposed conflicts of interest between the Sheriff and the Medical Examiner. Helen’s advocacy is helping more than the people incarcerated in LA County Jail, it has also touched one of the leaders of our lab, Rachel Smith, as she grapples with the brutal beating of her brother by law enforcement. One of John’s many legacies is helping Rachel heal.
