Since 2020, we have been investigating the potential health and mental health impacts of law enforcement helicopter surveillance in Los Angeles County from the start of 2017 through 2022. Take a look at the data we’ve collected so far.
DEATHS IN CUSTODY
Following the insights of community partners at Dignity and Power Now, we have been researching how carceral environments produce premature deaths and how these deaths are bureaucratically and biomedically accounted for. In addition to data and forensic document analysis, we also conduct oral histories with those who have lost loved ones in LA county jail.
CARCERAL ENVIRONMENTS
The thousands of prisons, jails, and detention centers in the United States amount to the fifth largest city in the country. In our carceral environments project we attempt to understand the environmental health implications of incarceration from drinking water and mold to extreme temperatures.
